2018 01 29 - 02 02 Red River Wildlife Refuge, Shreveport then on to Hot Springs, Arkansas

Saturday, January 27, 2018 - Shreveport, Louisiana

We had not been out to eat a meal for awhile so Saturday morning breakfast seemed like a good time. Since we were camping near on of the Diamond Jack Casino we figured they would have a good place to eat. Though we had no interest in the usual entertainment in the casino, they are always open. Walked in at something after 9am to a giant multi-floor open space. On one side is the grill and the buffet on the other. One look told us that very few of the guests were partaking which seemed like just about the right number for the setting. We turned on our heels to research where the locals go for breakfast.
With two locations, Strawn's is the place. Yes, indeed it is in a strip mall but completely packed with locals who were easy to spot by all the LSU Tiger shirts, hats, pants, jackets, earrings and socks.

Quirky spot with a mural of Lucy and Ethel wrapping candy off the conveyor belt, a classic. Good eggs, grits, coffee and lots of bacon. What's not to like?

Monday, January 29, 2018 After lunch at another local hotspot of crab sandwiches and pie with my cousin, Marie, a walk around Lake Caroline at the Red River Wildlife Refuge. The dogs loved it.

Great Egret

Bob gets more great shots of the wildlife.

Wednesday, January 31, 2018 - Hot Springs, Arkansas

Our new digs for the week we are in Hot Springs.

Interesting artwork. Sign above door says Russian Villa.

Bob and I decided to "take the baths" at the only continuously open bath house in Hot Springs which opened in 1912. It has all the original fixtures for the different baths - whirlpool, sitz bath, steam and shower. The water is 143 degrees directly out of the ground. Way too hot for bathing. There are also options for massage, manicures and pedicures. We both enjoyed the relaxing hour or more. There is only one other bath house. All the other ones have closed and have been transformed into different enterprises.

Had no idea that Arkansas has anything to do with the Spring Training. Twenty days to go.
One of several outdoor hot spring pools. There are also several outdoor taps where locals and tourists fill bottles for home use, both hot and cold. The springs produce about 700,000 gallons of water every day.
The Arlington Hotel and Spa.
Julie - We know you come to Arkansas a lot but had no idea you had an enterprise in town.
Possibly a mural of a Quapaw tribe member
The Overlook porch of the Rec Center at the Cloud Nine RV Park.
View from the porch. Hope it warms up enough for some porch rocking.
